INSTA Detachable Dimmer Switch
Two rings. Two functions. One interface.
What if one control could handle several functions – without becoming complicated?
This industrial design project for INSTA in Lüdenscheid explored exactly that idea.
The concept is based on two magnetic, detachable rotary rings. Each ring can control a different function. For example: Outer ring → dim the light, inner ring → raise or lower the blinds. Instead of adding more buttons, switches or screens, the functionality is concentrated in one simple physical interface.
The magnetic attachment makes the rings easy to remove, while the rotary movement provides a clear and tactile interaction. During the design development, STOCKENHUBER DESIGN explored numerous variations in geometry, proportions, surface structure and detailing before developing the selected concept further.
The final design was also translated into 3D-printing data for prototyping, allowing the physical interaction and ergonomics to be evaluated directly. For us, this is one of the most interesting aspects of industrial design: good product design doesn’t necessarily only add functionality. Sometimes it removes complexity. Two rings. Two functions. One clear interface. CREATING IDEAS MEANS CREATING VALUE.
The brief was as difficult as it gets. The starting point was a technical component that the client provided as a photo.
